LIBRARY

Ron Falconer, our Librarian, has 3 new videos. Sharpening, Boxes with Treaded Lids, and Finishing Turnings.

EXHIBITIONS

Jaimie Berry informed us that we won’t hear about possible space at Millarville Craft sale until August. Nothing has sold yet from our Oak Shoppe display. Our display at Lee Valley is full.

PHOTO TENT

As advertised, Henning Johansen produced a Photo Tent for our members use. It will be stored at Black Forest Wood Co. Henning produced it from poly pipe, and gray seamless paper (TAKE CAREFULL CARE OF THE PAPER). It is 3’ x 3’, large enough for most work. When using digital camera, set for tungsten. Do not use flash as this would produce harsh shadows. Bob Adamson mentioned they built one using black velvet instead of seamless paper with lights outside of a curtain material.

Members expressed appreciation to Henning for producing this tool.

The Beaman Raffle Draw

Kathy Somerville of Lee Valley donated a heavy scraper and Ron Falconer donated 11 pieces of wood. The scraper was won by Joe Van Keulen and the pieces of wood by 11 others. Draw proceeds toward our Library was $73.00

DEMONSTRATION

Terry Golbeck provided us with an interesting refresher on Spindle Turning. He showed us how to copy a short chair leg from a piece of 3 X 3 Beechwood. He told us the benefit of using a cup drive. (slips if tool catches) He placed the tool rest about 1 finger depth away from wood stock and used a skew underhanded with point downward to square off the piece at one end. He used a Roughing Gouge in a sideways motion to round off the piece with a hand on the tool rest to control depth. He used a layout of proposed result on a plywood template from which he pencil marked low points on the turning. He used a skew with point upwards to start, then a spindle gouge moving from high to low turning beads etc.

He showed us the safest way to sand is to work on the bottom of the piece.

When asked, why not use a scraper rather than a skew for removing material, he explained how the scraper could catch and suggested it is best to only use a scraper on end grain.

This was great for new turners and a well presented demo for experienced turners.

SHOW AND TELL

Peter Eddy displayed a most interesting Split-Turning from 4 square pieces of square stock. AS I can’t explain how this was done, II SUGGEST PETER THAT YOU BRING THIS TO OUR NEXT MEETING for those who were absent can marvel at your work (and ask you lots of questions).

Don West brought 2 tubs of various species of wood pieces for members to help themselves. He also displayed a number of large turnings from Poplar. He suggested using Polyall 2000 for shoring up punk wood (get form Home Hardware or Majestic Trailer) and Crazy Glue with bits of shavings for filling imperfections. He suggests not using accelerator as it weakens the glue and sometimes discolors the wood.

Don West brought 15 yo-yo’s turned from different species of wood. He offered to give them to anyone who could identify the various species. I didn’t wait around to see if anyone won them. I guess we will hear results at our next meeting.
