CALGARY WOODTURNERS GUILD
(LIKE
MINDED PEOPLE EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE OF WOOD TURNING)
APRIL 2005 – NEWSLETTER
- DON WEST handed out pen blanks in bundles of 8. Recipients were requested
to return 1 completed pen to our club as a donation which can be placed for
sale at our Spruce Meadows sales event in the fall. He also handed out many
pieces of wood, again requesting that recipients return a turning for the
Spruce Meadows sale. Don has more pieces of wood at home and made forms available
for members wishing a particular piece of wood to complete and return to him.
A neat idea, Don.
- Dave Beeman has a contact for low priced wood in Agassi BC. Call Dave if you have any interest.
- Andy Lockhart reported that turnings which certain members donated were placed in a silent auction by his Rotary Club and that a total of $92,000. was raised for Community Service.

- Jim Edwards had a number of handouts covering "HOW TO ACHIEVE AN EFFECTIVE VARNISH FINISH" AND "6 STOPPER BOWL JIG". These were produced by Mark Salisbury from the former Toronto club. They are well done and would be of interest to most turners. Jim has placed copies in our library and if you would like a copy, call Jim.
- Jim Edwards just advised that he has received another case
of salad bowl finish from Woodchuckers and if any one
is interested in buying some call Jim. Cost $13.00 a pint.

Programs, Jim Osenton
- While arrangements for our May meeting are not yet finalized, June is in
place as a tour of members shops to
take place on SATURDAY JUNE 11. Jim is still looking for shops in the southern
area of our city, so call Jim and offer yours. This is shaping up to be a
super event with a Bar-B-Que lunch and a new event, A SWAP MEET - BRING YOUR
OLD TOOLS, SOME WOOD AND SELL/SWAP OR WHATEVER.
Jim recently acquired a One-Way Centre Saver (Coring) System. He already has a McNaughton Centre Saver so gave us a demo on the One-Way explaining the difference with McNaughton as he went along. The One-Way together with 4 blades lists at approximately $900. compared with approximately $400. for the McNaughton tool. A couple of pluses for One-Way are, one can place lathe tailstock against work and it has en extra arm which follows the cutting blade and provides some stability. Jim believes the McNaughton tool works better in shallow work.
If any member is thinking of buying a Centre Saver, you might speak to Jim for advice.
Jim then placed a piece of soapstone, with wood glued to
both ends, on the lathe. He gave us a demonstration of applying super glue
to hairline cracks, and turning with various turning tools. Turning produces
lots of dust, so an idea of taping a shop vac to turning tools make a lot
of sense. Turning soapstone does not require as much sharpening of tools as
does turning wood. He uses regular sanding paper which doesn't clog like with
wood, but again lots of dust. Eventually Jim will be bringing in a finished
piece for show and tell.
RAFFLEKathy Somerville, Lee Valley, donated a scraper which was
won by Bob McCullagh. Ron Falconer donated a piece of Red Heart wood and Stafford
Wagstaff donated a nice piece of Elm which found happy new homes. Proceeds
were $108.00
