ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our Club By-Laws call for an Annual General Meeting to be held within 3 months of fiscal year end, and that members shall be notified, usually by Newsletter, at least 10 days prior to date of the Annual General Meeting. Our fiscal year end is December 31 and our Annual General Meeting will be held in conjunction with our FEBRUARY 7, 2006 general meeting. This was announced at our December meeting and THIS NEWSLETTER REPRESENTS REQUIRED WRITTEN NOTICE. The Chair will be calling for the election of 3 new Board Members, along with presentation of reports.
SALE OF THE LATE GORDON SCRUGGS WOOD SUPPLY
Jim Osenton took on the responsibility of selling Gordon's wood inventory for Gordon's widow, Dorothy. Results were $468. from the October sale, and $653. from the December sale for a total of $1,121. Needless to say, Dorothy is very pleased. (Stafford Wagstaff heard of Dorothy's appreciation at a recent community event.) This wouldn't have happened without a lot of effort from Jim Osenton and the willingness of members who bought the wood. HIGH FIVES TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN. It's gratifying to see the membership support given to a deceased members spouse.
DENNIS MILBRANDT'S "SITTING A ROUND" TURNED CHAIR MAKING EVENT
Dennis developed this competition in conjunction with the
November Wood Show. He provided comprehensive instructions and put up $100.
cash award. Don West produced the only entry and received the $100. award.
Don brought the finished chair to our meeting and described improvements for
next time. DENNIS REPORTED THAT HE IS GOING TO ESTABLISH THE SAME COMPETITION
AGAIN NEXT YEAR. So members, you now have a year to create your masterpieces.
With a year to design with a 2B pencil, and build, hopefully there will be
more than one entry next year.
MANY THANKS, DENNIS, FOR CREATING THIS EVENT!
RON FALCONER'S COMPETITION TO TURN SOMETHING OTHER THAN A BOWL OR VASE
A few meetings ago, Ron announced this competition and that
he would provide a special piece of wood to the winner. A number of interesting
pieces were entered and displayed on our "Show and Tell" tables.
Ron asked Dennis Milbrandt to judge the various pieces. Dennis proceeded to
do so based on 3 specific criteria: 5 points for each, skill, design, and
artistic finish. Winners were:
- Ron Falconer for beautiful flower (so he got his piece of wood back). I
think he donated it to one of the other winners.
- Dennis judged 3 other pieces as being equal so after the membership voted
winners were:
- 1st Don West - blue plate wave form, 2nd Peter Eddy - salt shaker, and 3rd
Rena Van Dam - Christmas Tree with interesting decorations and presents.
MANY THANKS, RON, FOR PROVIDING THIS FUN EVENT!
THE WOOD SHOW
Thanks to Dennis Millbrandt for organizing and all who participated.
Hopefully, we made a good impression and will be invited back next year and
retain the three booths along the side.
Jim Osenton reported on the Top Turning Fun Event as follows:
"Four people tried the challenge using Maple blanks, two had trouble
with the lathes tripping on overload. Terry Golbeck and Peter Eddy showed
us how it could be done, finishing their first tops on plenty of time. (Within
allotted 7 minutes.) Both the tops spun so well and so long that they both
finished their second tops easily before the first tops stopped spinning.
Their second tops looked almost as good as the first ones and when spun, their
second tops at the same time as spinning their first tops, both lasted at
least 2 minutes, with Peter's winning the challenge. All the participants
took home a piece of Seffudin's Tanzanian wood for participating. "
MANY THANKS, JIM, FOR PREPARING THE BLANKS AND FOR ARRANGING THIS EVENT.
RAFFLEKathy Somerville, Lee Valley, donated a Multi Tip Hollowing
Tool which was won by Jim Edwards. John Neville-Smith donated 3 pieces of
Manitoba Maple which went to 3 lucky members. Proceeds from the raffle were
$83.25. (How did we end up with .25 with tickets selling for $1. each?)
