Presentation

TERRY GOLBECK provided us with an informative presentation on dust collection. His initial bit of realization about the dangers involved with dust, related the fellow in New Brunswick who decided to clean his shop with compressed air and turned on the fan in the attic to clear the dust.. The result was charcoal instead of a shop. I could say the morel is not to clean the shop but a better idea is not to let the dust build up in the first place.

Terry catagorized the different types of dust and other irritants that need attention by woodworkers. Chemical compounds and molds can also be hazardous in the shop. The “dust collector” in your shop is really a power distributor of dust unless it is retrofitted with finer filtration.

Different collection systems were discussed along with the mechanics of flow and resistance of pipe and elbows. Personal protection using different masks and helmets rounded out the discussion. The library has a book on Woodshop dust control that is a useful reference.
