Carl is waiting for your call.
Secretary- Treasurer - Absent. Dues are now payable. Kindly mail completed Application and Person Protection Information forms to Carl with your renewal payment. ($30. with E'Mail, otherwise, $35.)
EXHIBITIONS - John Simard absent, however
provided the following report by E'Mail:
I'll pass on the info I've been able to collect so far on the various Christmas
Craft Sales.
- Spruce Meadows have increased their rental to $825. ($725 in /04) due to
utility costs. Application for/05, if desired, must be in by Feb. 4 including
full payment. 2005 sale dates are NOVEMBER 18-20. They could not tell me if
these dates conflict with the Grey Cup. Anyway, they are unable to move dates
due to other commitments. I called the Stampeder office and they don't know
2005 Grey Cup dates.
- I talked with the coordinator for the Telus Convention Centre Art Market,
Debbie or Marion at 1-877-929-9933, and was told they might be able to get
us in there but, of course, their rates are higher…
$800 - $1000.
- I called the coordinator for the Calgary Stampede Festival of Arts, Marg
Brown at 938-8102, a couple of
times and left messages but I was only able to make contact this morning when
I recalled. Their spaces rent from $455 - $1,500., the 10' X 10" size
ranges from $720. to $820. depending on whether they are aisle or corner and
the most costly have storage space as well.
- Just a bit more info, I had spoken to an assistant earlier for the Stampede
sale, but the main organizer, Marg
Brown, called me late this afternoon with a little more detail. The 10' X
10' booth was $720.last year but depending on her rent and Display Company's
rate, that may go up his year. She will send me an application form which
must be completed and returned by April 1, if we are interested.
After dabate, it was MOVED and SECONDED, and CARRIED that
we stay with Spruce Meadow for one
more year.
PROGRAM - Jim Osenton outlined the February
meeting with Terry Golbeck discussing Dust Collection.
- June will be the Shop Tour
- Ideas for March, April and May include Adhesives, Eccentric Turning, and
Thread Chasing. Details will follow.
- Jim introduced the idea for New Member/Beginner Turners to potentially have
demos, perhaps on a Saturday dealing with issues such as basic bowls, center
savers, rims, and sharpening. These events could be held either at an individual's
shop or Black Forest. Details to follow.
RAFFLEKathy Somerville on behalf of Lee Valley donated a Diamond
parting Tool, and two pieces of wood were also donated. Proceeds from the
raffle were $88.00.
Jim Osenton entertained members with his ideas on decoration and ornamentation for bowls. Why bother, you may ask. Well, either for curiosity, originality or salability. Jim showed members a variety of methods to insert plugs in rims with some prototype jigs. Rather than use straight dowels that either may not be the right size or not wishing to use the type of wood that is available, Jim referred members to a tapered reamer sold by Lee Valley. The taper of the reamer matches that of a standard pencil sharpener allowing the use of exotic woods for the plugs. The patterns produced by the plug, which can be infinitely variable, depend on the angle of intersection with the surface of the bowl.
As another method of decoration, Jim showed members how to router grooves with a prototype tilting table and various different bits. One can either, leave the grooves empty, colour them of fill them with appropriate shaped strips of contrasting wood. Varying the angle of the groove and as with the plugs, the shape of the bowl will produce various patterns.
Thanks Jim, for a very interesting and thought
provoking demo.
