WOOD AVAILBLE – Dumpsters around new building sites – see SHOW and TELL

WOODS BECOMING AVAILABLE – Jaimie Berry has his name on the records to be informed when the trees start coming down for the Elbow Dr./Glenmore intersection. There is said to be approximately 300 trees of various species. Clear out time more may be short so we will try and E’Mail members when this materializes.

There was discussion about turning wood from trees where Cygon 3 has been used to control insects, especially on Birch trying to control Birch Leaf Minor. Caution was expressed and one should be careful of final use – Maybe NO for salad bowls or other food type items.

Terry Golbeck reviewed considerations as to importing wood. Restrictions are quite broad. So get informed before trying to do this.

Terry Golbeck displayed a new item being handled by Black Forest. It is a miniature chain saw and some other attachments which can be attached to a compact angle grinder. Looks like another worthwhile woodworking item.

Edited version of E’Mail from Kathy Somerville –

“Lee Valley Tools invites members of CWT to “an Evening with David Ellsworth” via video at the Lee Valley seminar room on Tuesday June 22 , 6:00 to 9:00 pm. (No charge) Lee Valley is now selling the David Ellsworth turning tool and this demo will answer questions about using it and sharpening this unique tool. Also, Larry Diegel will on hand to demonstrate the use of the Kelton sharpening jig, sharpening the Ellsworth tool and other woodworking tools. For those who own a Oneway Wolverine Sharpening jig, they may learn more uses as the Kelton unit is similar.”

Member John Nevile-Smith is looking for a Jointer. If you or someone you know has one for sale call john @204-3070.

DEMONSTRATION

“Holding on to your work” by Jim Osenton, Don West, and Terry Golbeck

Jim Osenton began with a bit of history based on Mike Darlow’s book “Woodturning Methods”

Wood turning began back in the 1500’s. Turners moved from Bow/Pole lathes to Two Bearing Headstocks. As there were different sizes of threads on these early units, they came with a tap so one could make own threads. A distant relative to our Jack Whitworth originated standard threads as we know them today. Development moved on to metal beds, Morse tapers, Scroll chucks by James Dundas in 1842, to Jacobs chuck developed by a Mr. Jacobs in 1902. Then came Self-Centering chucks. Wood turning as a hobby started in the early 1960’s. Jim reviewed Screw Chucks, Spur Drives, Pin Chucks, and Collett Chucks.

Don West showed us and explained his approach to usage of Spigot Jaws, Dovetail Jaws, Screw Chucks, and Face Plates. Don doesn’t like changing jaws for different uses so has a number of Chucks with different holding jaws attached. Don, displayed various finished pieces and explained how they were chucked. He then showed us his large wood Face Plate covered with rubber which he uses for vacuum holding. He brought a huge mother of a Birds Eye Maple Vessel (approx. 50 pound finished) that he turned using vacuum to hold it in place. He uses rubber O-Rings of various sizes to hold pieces which may not have a flat surface.

Jim then displayed, home made, large plywood face plate for jam chucking and a ring chuck. These jigs are for turning bottoms of bowls, plates etc.

Terry Golbeck displayed home made jam chuck for turning egg shapes and screw chuck for holding small pieces.

Editors note: There was a ton of information and different ways of holding wood for turning in this program. If any member needs more information on holding things on your lathe, why not give one of Jim, Don, or Terry a call and I am sure they will be very willing to help you.
