ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEW BUSINESS/OTHER

The Late Harold Biswanger left our club a supply of wood suitable for turning. It is presently stored at Andy Lockhart’s place. President Wilf is looking for ideas as to how handle this. Give him a call with your ideas.

Our club is going to be well represented at the Woodturning Symposium being held in Provo Utah mid-June by Jim Thorne, Don West, Kathy Somerville, Jim Osenton, Dave Beeman, and Tony Lucas. If any one else wishes to go along, get in touch with one of the group.

From Kathy Somerville- “John Manzo is a handicapped gentleman who is looking for someone to turn him a cane. He will purchase the fittings, you can work with him picking some wood and then turn it for him. He is willing to negotiate a price for the work. Please call him at 253-4185 if you can help him with this”

New Members – If anyone wishes to learn more about wood turning, both Black Forest Wood Company and Lee Valley offer various levels of courses. Give them a call to learn more about upcoming wood turning courses.

EXHIBITIONS

The Committee declined utilization of an offer for four Saturday dates during July and August. They didn’t feel comfortable in trying to find manpower for four separate dates during the summer months.

The Beaman Raffle Draw

Kathy Somerville on behalf of Lee Valley donated an RS 2000 Sorby System for deep hollowing. Jim Osenton donated his potato chip bowl. Ron Falconer and Dave Beeman donated some turning blanks. We raised $144.00 for our Library Fund from this draw. The Sorby System was won by Ron den Oudsten, and the others donations were enjoyed by 5 other members.

DEMONSTRATION

Jim Osenton turned a Potato Chip Bowl. He had donations of green birch from Bob Adamson and Dave Beeman. Jim roughed the blank to approximate round shape and attached the flat side by face plate and for safety held the other side by the tailstock. This strong mount enabled him to try and stop the lathe (he couldn’t) with his Big Bertha ( 1’ Bowl Gouge), and wow, the wet woodchips flew, as he shaped the underside of the bowl. He used a ½” bowl gouge to flatten a base for the spigot. He sized the spigot such that the chuck when attached would be nearly closed thereby getting most possible coverage of spigot edge. Jim used a few different sized bowl gouges, all ground with finger nail grind but with different shapes of bevel for turning different areas of the piece. He then proceeded to sand and apply a wax finish. Next a large chuck was attached and the piece reversed for turning paper thin brim and base of the bowl. He had a light mounted to shine through the bowl to let him know of thickness. He worked the brim first and as it got thinner, he applied Clapham’s Cutting & Sanding Compound liquid to keep the brim moist and help keep it from cracking. A tip: make sure that inside of bowl gouges are kept sharp. When the brim was turned to about 1 1/2 mm, he held sandpaper in both hands, one for each side of brim to get a very smooth base. By now, the brim was warping and he moved on to inside of the bowl using same technique. The result was very, very thin wide brimmed bowl. Wow what a demo!!!! Thanks Jim.

SHOW AND TELL

Ron Falconer displayed his first attempt at turning 3 bowls from a Birch blank using his Centre Saver. Quite a start!

Don West displayed a large Walnut Bowl done with 3 off-centers using his vacuum chuck. He also showed us the result of filling a void using System 3 Epoxy/Hardener. He had another display of Yo-Yo’s made from different species of wood. Guess all species and win yourself some Yo-Yo’s. Don also donated another bucket of small wood pieces.

Carl Smith brought a couple of pieces of African Stinkwood for ideas on what to do with them. Helpful suggestions were made.

Peter Eddy displayed his interesting Split-Turning made Turning made from 4 square pieces of square stock. Members were just as interested as last month. Peter got the idea from a 1996 issue of the Best of Woodturning magazine and we are all intrigued. Peter, when do you do a demo on this for us?
