CALGARY WOODTURNERS GUILD
(LIKE
MINDED PEOPLE EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE OF WOOD TURNING)
MAY 2005 – NEWSLETTER
- There was discussion as to whether or not we should buy a projection screen. After discussion, it was MOVED by Bob Leinweber and SECONDED by Norm Olsen that we buy a projection screen. Motion CARRIED Unanimously. (Our minutes of meeting for October 2004 indicate that Jim Osenton did a review and that we could buy one for $71.00 to $97.00.)
- In regard to the Stampede demo, Jim Osenton and Dennis Milbrandt will be doing this.
- Don West enquired as to whether or not all minutes for previous meeting need to be approved. Our By-Laws do NOT stipulate this being necessary. Our By-Laws do state that an objective of our newsletter is "To communicate to members details of past meetings and to serve notice of future meetings" (It is expected that any member can question contents of newsletter at the next meeting if desired.) Another objective of our newsletter is "To include minutes of meetings and be kept in a permanent file by the Secretary as a record of regular meetings", and this is being done. For the information of all members, our By-Laws are practically the same as those provided to all members in November 2004. Our final By Laws as registered with the Alberta Government are available from your Secretary any time.
- Don West bought up the thought as to whether or not our club should consider operating a casino. After discussion the general feeling was that we do not have need of such funding and that operation of casinos should be left to more needy organizations.
- Don West told us about our member Dale Keith's needs for completion of a shed for his turning equipment. After discussion it was MOVED by Dennis Mildbrandt, and SECONDED by Don West that a team consisting of members, Dennis Mildbrandt, Dale Hildebrand, and Rod Spence inspect and review the situation and report back to our club at the next meeting as to how we might assist Dale with his project. Motion CARRIED Unanimously.
- Don West suggested that the Mini Lathe we are buying for members to use for demos be left with member Dale Keith for his use while not required for member's demos. Our membership concurred with this suggestion.
- Don West handed out wood for making pens as had been ordered earlier. He said that he has some African Blackwood good for pen blanks for any member who wishes same. He also told us that he has 14 rough turned large bowl blanks and 12 large fruit bowls all of Poplar, all available to any member provided they donate some for our Fall Spruce Meadows sale.
- We already e'mailed members advising that Vern Steinbrecker of VJ's Turning Supplies Ltd. will donate a free pen kit for the first 10 e'mails he receives from the members donating pens to our Spruce Meadows sale event from Don Wests's challenge. OK guys and Gals more free pen blanks!
- Roger Kirkham has informed the writer that Princess Auto have diamond stone cutters for use in truing up grinding wheels @ $3.88 each
- Eelbren Summers has informed us that Mike Clarkson and Liz Munro have opened a new art store known as THE FRITZ in Red Deer. Their address and e'mail are: 4831, 53rd Street Red Deer and e'mail address is the fritz@shaw.ca. They state they are looking for artists of any kind. Who knows they might want to carry turnings from our members. Why not contact them if you have any interest.
- Dave Beeman has located an interesting website on hollow turning. It is www.berger.co.nz/project1.htm.
- We haven't seen John Kroeger for a while so the writer phoned him. John's has had to place his wife who has Parkinson's into a facility and he visits her every day. We may not see much of John. He would welcome a call.
- Jim Osenton broke an index finger while changing something
on his angle grinder. He will have more to tell us about safety.
- SECRETARY-TREASURER - reported that we have $3,955. in our bank account. He also indicated there are 12 members who have not paid their 2005 dues and will be removed from our records for non payment of dues which were supposed to be paid by March 31, as per our By-Laws. There another 5 members with unpaid dues who say they wish to remain on our records and will be mailing payment ASAP. (The Secretary- Treasurer position is big enough without chasing for unpaid dues. Kindly respect that dues are due on an annual basis and are to be paid by March 31 each year.) Still looking for a member to help with our newsletter.
- EXHIBITIONS - Still looking for a replacement for John Simard.
- LIBRARY - Ron Falconer reported that the new DVD's covering the most recent AAW event are now on hand for members use.
- PROGRAMS - The next meeting will consist of member workshop
tour on SATURDAY June 11. SEE DIRECTIONS AT END OF THIS NEWSLETTER.
TERRY GOLBECK gave us a neat demonstration on air brushing following the recent Binh Pho workshop at Black Forest Wood Company. He developed a pattern on Friskat, a material somewhat like Mac Tac which is available at art supply stores. He then attached the pattern to a piece of Baltic Birch and removed cut out pieces of Friskat as he airbrushed the piece. The final act was to remove all of the Friskat and view interesting results. NOTE THE FREE UPCOMING DEMO ON AIR BRUSHING BEING HELD AT BLACK FOREST ON MAY 28th.
JIM THORNE then gave us a demonstration on wood piercing as demonstrated by Binh Pho. Jim used an Orthodontist drill which spins @ 450,000 Rev. per Min. He brought with him a nice vessel which he had previously turned and proceeded to pierce and texture it with different bits. He showed us the difference between negative and positive piercing. Nice work. The tool that he used costs $450.and bits cost $3.00 each.
RON FALCONER showed us how to do eccentric turning without fancy tools. In order to gain the eccentric aspect, he simply places a rounded piece in his chuck at different angles. ie: instead of pushing the piece in the chuck straight as one would usually do, he pushes one side in more than another, then changes position for different desired eccentricity. (This is hard to explain, so if you are interested in this, you best call Ron for instruction
First Annual Shop Tour & Swap Meet
Mark June 11th down on your calendars, collect up excess wood, tools or other woodturning swap-able stuff and join the Calgary Woodturners Guild.
The first workshop tour stop will be Stafford Wagstaff's shop at 708 Hunterplain Hill NW (telephone number 274-0866 if you get lost) and he will welcome visitors between 9am and 10am. Stafford says there is street parking and you can park in the back lane as well.
Next stop is Jim Osenton's shop at 119 Silver Valley Bay NW (telephone 618-3820 if you are still lost) and he will welcome visitors between 10am and 11am. When you enter Silver Valley Bay watch for CWG signs directing you to the back lanes where there is ample parking. The yard has a ranch rail type fence and the best gate is next to the garage.
Last but not least Wilf Talbot will welcome you to 4871 Verona Dr NW (telephone 288-5698 if you are lost again) after 11am. Parking is available in the back lanes, turn right after Wilf's house onto Vegas Way
At around 12 noon lunch ( burgers and soft drinks) will be served in Wilf's backyard (or his garage if the weather does not co-operate) and there will be opportunities to swap, sell trade or give away the stuff you brought with you.
Those of you that don't live in the NW keep the space you have cleared by bringing stuff to the swap meet, and offer your shop for next years tour.
