TERRY GOLBECK - spoke about the Heather Cline demonstration being held this coming weekend.

JIM JONES - Jim is planning another Woodturning Symposium at Okotoks High School similar to last year. . Date of this event has been established as February 12, 2005. He has 3 lathes for demos and is looking for members to fill 12 demo slots. Jim Osenton, and Ron Falconer have agreed to help. Jim needs more help - Call him if you can help.

RON FALCONER - spoke further about a collaborative turning plan to create a ¼ scale steam tractor. He now has blueprints and needs to hear from any member who can get copies made. If you can help call Ron.

NIGEL HISTON - a member of SAWS informed us that the Calgary Drop In Centre (CDIP), 5513 -3rd Street SE, Tel: 262-2614, Web Site, www.cdics.com, has been approached by Planned Parenthood for a major project. CDIC requires your assistance and knowledge to teach sharpening lathe tools and possibly some instruction for turning. If you can help call BRUCE at CDIP or e'mail him at woodshop@cdics.com.

PRESIDENT WILF - informed us that SAWS have now purchased a projector, and as earlier reported we have cameras. ANDY LOCKHART has undertaken a project of building a box on wheels to hold these items.

MEL GIBSON - our insurance Broker, with Godfrey-Morrow, spoke to us about our new Insurance Policy. It provides $2 Million General Liability and $10,000. Commercial Property coverage for assets owned by our Guild. Both categories have a $500. deductible clause. Liability coverage includes: if we are legally liable the insurer pays for defending us. Liability coverage covers members and volunteers at any event authorized by our Guild. If members should be demonstrating otherwise, they might want to have their involvement authorized by our Guild to ensure coverage. In regard to property coverage, this relates, only, to assets owned by our guild. Members may want to ensure they are covered under their personal insurance policy for items at a sale or demo event.

DAVE BEEMAN - remarked about members needing to haul their own lathes to the Canwest Show and Sale. He suggested that our Guild purchase a couple on mini-lathes which could be used for demonstrations and possibly loaned out to new members who have not yet decided on buying one. We heard that another club has lathes which they rent out to new members @ $10.00 per month. It was also suggested that if we were to purchase lathes, we should also purchase some starter turning tools. Dave mentioned that he has approached General and the lathes would likely cost under $300. each.

Mike Hawkins agreed to check with known suppliers of lathes and bring back a recommendation to our group at the next meeting.

In regard to turning tools, it was suggested that possibly some of our members have some they would like to donate to this cause. Check your shop and let us know if this is feasible at our next meeting.

BY-LAWS - Wilf and Carl informed members that following SAWS example, Province of Alberta instruction on "Forming a Society", and overview by Gib Clark, a lawyer and member of SAWS that the Board now has new By-Laws for review by our membership. However to proceed we need to add one of Society, Association, Club, Fellowship, Guild, Foundation or Institute to our present name "Calgary Woodturners". Following discussion, it was MOVED, SECONDED and UNANIMOUSLY approved that we call ourselves CALGARY WOODTURNERS GUILD. Furthermore members were informed that we need to increase our number of Directors from present 3 to a minimum of 5. It was MOVED, SECONDED and UNANIMOUSLY approved that JAIMIE BERRY AND NORM OLSEN be added to our Board. Demonstration

TERRY GOLBECK spoke to us about the Emma Lake Artists Collaborative event he attended last summer and his interest in developing a similar event in Calgary or local area. A nucleus of woodturners started Emma Lake event which is held on property owned by the university of Saskatchewan at Emma Lake (11hours north-east of Calgary). They get some grant money from the Saskatchewan Arts Council who was the main sponsor. Now artists from around the world with various interests attend. They had approximately 100 participants for most recent event. Interests ranged from turning, metal work to dolls and painters. Artists with different interests collaborate in small groups to produce interesting results. This event provides local interest in arts in the local community. At Emma Lake, materials were supplied and consisted of "garage sale" type of stuff. Artists do not get to keep their work, but, rather it is all placed on sale at the end of the event. They raised $45,000. from the most recent event. Buyers/collectors came from all over, some from USA. Terry's fee was $300. plus another $500. for living expenses for this 1 week event.

Terry showed us pictures taken at the recent Emma Lake event and pictures of finished items. It is apparent this kind of event gets artists to think outside their particular expertise and helps them to think "outside of the box".

Emma Lake conduct their event every 2 years and events take place in New Zealand, Australia and other parts of the world taking place periodically.

Jim Jones has offered Terry Okotoks High School for a local event. Terry is going to make a presentation to SAWS and see if he can gain sufficient interest to plan an event here.

This was a very interesting presentation and hopefully Terry will get sufficient support to develop a similar event here.
