Programs - Jim Osenton
-December meeting - Member participation in turning tops competitively. Bring
your favorite turning tools and join in the fun.
Jim Edwards handled this portion of the meeting. Don James brought in a number of excellent turnings consisting of very large bowls and some small thin vessels which were coloured with various colours of alcohol based aniline dye. There were a number of other items for members to view. This is becoming an important part of our meetings as members have an opportunity of seeing many examples of nice work and can discuss the process the contributor went through to reach their finished projects.
Dave Beaman, 238-0311, has a 12 X 36 CTC lathe
with ½ HP motor for sale at $100. He also has some chisels for sale
at various prices.
Jim Osenton and Don West gave us a good demonstration on
thread chasing. Bob McCullough brought in a number of finished samples and
mentioned that he likes using Dogwood best for this. Jim used Cherry and Swiss
Pear which were difficult to work with. Jim suggested it would be better to
use Boxwood or Lignum Vitae. Jim started by truing up a cylinder and made
a recess on the shoulder to establish end of the threaded portion. He used
the male threading tool, moving very slowly at about 200 RPM, gradually make
deeper cuts to establish the finished thread. With the male portion completed,
Jim proceeded to use the female tool on the inside of the turning. Jim and
Don suggested wiping super glue or epoxy glue on the wood before starting
to make threads to reduce one of the variables of the wood. Members enjoyed
seeing use of thread chasing tools first hand. Jim mentioned that Fred Holder
has a good video on thread chasing. Your Editor notes there is an excellent
description of thread chasing on pages 60 to 64 in the August issue (magazine
number 152). Bob McCullough also brought in a home made thread making jig
for members to view.
RAFFLEKathy Sommerville provided prizes consisting of a Spindle
Master, won by Ian Kennedy and a Sand Master, won by Andy Lockhart. Proceeds
from the raffle were $81.00.
