HIGHLIGHTS FROM EXECUTIVE MEETING OF AUGUST 26TH

- Discussion on working towards improving content and quality of our monthly meetings.

- Need to have a demo/speaker at every meeting.

- Keep business content of meetings to a minimum, with more done at Executive meetings and transmitted to general membership at regular meetings.

- Have demo/speaker before coffee break at meetings, with Show and tell at the end.

- Start meetings at 7:00 rather than at present time of 7:30.

- Executive meetings to be held at least quarterly.

- As we are getting crowded in present location, investigate a larger venue such as at the back of Black Forest shop or elsewhere.

- In regard to Show and Tell, arrange for a sign-up sheet, with first 6 on this list to have the opportunity of discussing their work. To have a monitor and to start things off, Bob Vergette has agreed to do this.

- Arrange for a register for members with items to sell/who will accept commissions/willing to assist new members.

- Develop some charitable initiatives

- Expand our library.

- Consider creating a soft box so that members could photograph their work.

- Hold an election of new officers during our November meeting.

SHOW AND TELL

RON FALCONER displayed some nice turnings done from wood scraps. He used Aspen, Mayday, Poplar, Water Birch, and Sumac. He finished them with Urethane over Miniwax. (It’s nice to see work from new turners.)

JOHN KROEGER displayed a very large urn from many, many pieces segmented into a beautiful artistic design. He encouraged discussion on design.

PAT CHURCHMAN displayed a nice bowl made from Honduras Mahogany. He finished with mineral oil and wax.

JIM OSENTON displayed a large bowl produced from one piece of Curly Maple. He used his bowl saver allowing him to produce 3 more bowls and a piece which he glued to the top producing a larger finished piece.

GORDON SCRUGGS displayed a Segmented Salad Bowl and a sample of 6 serving bowls done from Walnut and Honduras Mahogany, with Purple Heart segments. These were done as a commission for an upcoming wedding. His Tung Oil finish produced discussion on toxicity of Tung Oil and need for it to dry at least a month before useage.

Demonstration

BOB VERGETTE provided us with a well researched discussion/demo on vacuum chucking. He showed us a number of chuck he made including, one with an O-Ring near the outer edge, (holds 636 pounds!), one covered with neoprene, and a couple utilizing ABS plumbing fittings. He proved their great holding capability and provided us with demonstration of finishing a bowl and making a large spoon. He finishes his work with a mixture of Spar Varnish, Linseed Oil and Turpentine. His compressor and fittings cost him around $100. Bob would welcome members to contact him on this subject. Refer below for an outline of Bob’s presentation. Also you can go to this website for info on chucking:

Outline for Vacuum Chucking Presentation

1. Why Vacuum Chuck?

· Speed

· Flexibility

· No holding marks

· Reverse turning easy esp. with natural edge

· No sanding or nubbin to trim

2. Vacuum Concepts

· Air pressure is about 15 psi or about 30” mercury (Hg)

· Most vacuum gauges measure in inches of Hg

· Pressure in psi is half gauge reading in inches of Hg

· Therefore 20” Hg is 10 psi

· Total holding force is vacuum times effective area

· Holding force on12” dia of vacuum area is 10 lb/in2 * Pi * 6” * 6” = 1130lb

· Seems like a lot but there are other factors

· If diameter is halved then force is quartered

3. Vacuum Equipment Elements

· Device to create vacuum

· Vacuum pump

· Required Capacity

· 3 to 5 cfm open flow

· 20” to 28” Hg at no flow

· Typically requires 1/2 to 3/4 hp motor

· Sources of Supply

· Oneway

· Auto air conditioning compressor

· Dairy milking machine

· Industrial vacuum pump (Gast)

· Vacuum cleaner

· High volume low vacuum (6 in Hg at no flow)

· Vacuum motors are cooled by flow so can overheat

· Venturi

· Compressed air flowing though venturi creates a vacuum

· Need a shop compressor

· Will use a large volume of air to create adequate vacuum/flow

· Mechanism to feed vacuum through hollow rotating headstock shaft

· Oneway rotary adapter

· EZ vacuum chuck adaptor

· Some lathes come with connection (Stubby)

· Controls etc

· Vacuum gauge – to monitor the level of vacuum

· Filter – to keep dust out of pump

· Ball valve – for quick release

· Needle valve – for fine control

· May need muffler

· Miscellaneous fittings

· Device to apply vacuum to bowl or other

· Commercially available metal cylinders

· Home made ABS or PVC cylinders

· Home made plates

· All need resilient plastic or foam for seal

4. Safety Issues

· Power outage
· Turning through
· Too much turning force
· Severe catch
· Punky wood
· Breakout of inclusion
· Structural failure
· Low vacuum due to porous wood
