PROVO - Jim Osenton reported on the Woodturning Symposium held in Provo during June. This year they invited all previous presenters. Attendance was 750 resulting crowding to view demos. They indicate that they are going back to 450 next year. Jim brought back a few Craft Supplies catalogues which are with our library treasures for those interested.
CANWEST TOOL SHOW AND SALE - Bob Vergette spoke about the Canwest Woodworking Tool Sale and Show, October 29/31/04. There will be 2 mini lathes for demos. 15 members indicated interest in displaying turnings. While this event is not for selling turnings, a display board will be erected indicating members with items on display. A separate E'Mail describing this event was sent to members recently.
A show of hands indicated support for our involvement in this event.
While Bob circulated a sign-up sheet at the meeting, he still needs more member help with demos and manning our booth. Call Bob if you can help. There will be no entry fee for members participating. For details please refer to memo on the event recently E'Mailed to members or call Bob.
The matter of Liability and loss Insurance has not as yet been defined.
WOOD WHICH MIGHT BE COMING AVAILABLE - In regard to trees coming down for the Glenmore/Elbow intersection, Jamie Berry has met with the architect who enquired about our insurance coverage (nil at present) and has had no further contact.
TERRY GOLBECK - reports having a treadle lathe left with Black Forest for sale. It is a Barry Ellis manufactured around 1880 in England. Original owner is said to have been a Merchant Seaman who traveled the world with this unit. It appears to be in good condition. The owner is looking for $2,100. for it.

- Heather Cline demo on November 6 and workshop on November 7 on Acrylic Surface
Finishes.

WILF TALBOT reported -
- Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild "West Coast Roundup Symposium"
being held
September 10/12
- Greater Vancouver Woodturners` Guild woodturning competition October 15/17

- AAW Chapter Collaborative Challenge for the 2005 AAW Annual Symposium in
Kansas City. (Carl has details for those interested.)
- Florida Woodturning Symposium being held January 14/16 at Lake Yale near
Eustis, Florida. (Carl has details for those interested.)
- Southwest Association of Turners Symposium being held October 1/3. (Carl
has sketchy details for those interested.
JIM JONES - Jim is planning another Woodturning Symposium at Okotoks High School similar to last year. He has 3 lathes for demos and is looking for members to fill 12 demo slots on Saturday. Final date has not been set, but Jim expects to conduct this event between late February and early March, 2005. Call Jim if you would like to help.
WOOD, WOOD AND MORE WOOD:
John Neville-Smith, Ron Falconer, Don West and Wilf Talbot (and I might have
missed others) brought wood to our meeting for giveaway to members. THANKS

Secretary-Treasurer, Carl Smith
- Reported that we have $2,872. in the bank, with rent of $722.25 prepaid
for our Spruce Meadows Christmas Market booth. All member dues are paid up-to-date.
- To investigate insurance cost and coverage and report to the next meeting.
Exhibitions, John Simard
- Our club was well represented providing turning demos at the Spruce Meadows
International on June 11/13. Demos were done by, Jack Whitworth, Ron Falconer,
and Glenn Summers. AThank You to each and a Special Thank You to Glenn and
Eebren Summers who traveled from Torrington each day.
- Spruce Meadows International Christmas Market, November 19/21. While John
circulated a sign-up sheet, he needs more volunteers to man our booth. (Refer
to separate E'Mail.). This is the ONLY event, at present, for members to display
and try selling their turnings sponsored by our club. Last year 18 members
sold turnings totaling $4,425. Our club earned 25% of sales, $1,106. which
covered rent for our booth etc. with $208. left over for club activities.
If you are a recent member or are unsure of what items sell or if your work
might sell, call John for advice. He will be pleased to help you.
- Millarville - We applied to have a booth at their Christmas sale, but were
turned down for this year. However they will be holding a Ladies Guild sale
on October 15 and members can include turning with them. They take $20% commission.
Call John for details.
- Oak Shop - Only 1 item has been sold. There is room for more turnings. Call
John if interested.
- Lee Valley - This is a display being handled by Jaimie Berry. Only 1 item
has been sold. Jaimie would like to have more items for rotation. Call him
if interested.
Library, Ron Falconer
- Jim Osenton brought back a number of things for our library from the Provo
Symposium. Ron is going to provide members with an updated listing of books
and videos available to members. For the benefit of new members, our library
is carried at Black Forest Wood Co.
Programs, Jim Osenton - Programs are now in place for this
fall.
- October - Don West, Finishing
- November - Terry Golbeck, About creating another Emma Lake
- December - Another fast turning competition (Last year egg cups)
- Spring, 2005 - Workshop tours similar to SAWS, however with definite time
slots for each shop.
Kathy Somerville, Lee Valley, donated a nice shiny new skew
which was won by Glenn Summers. A number of members also won a number of wonderful
pieces of wood donated by members. Proceeds were $92.00

Jim started off with sources of turnable material (usually wood)
URBAN LUMBER
- Trees or limbs, yours or others
- Private or Commercial sources (Arborcare etc)
- Havesting, DIY (Do It Yourself) or DBO (Done By Others)
- Liability questions (Will cutting down the tree fall on the house? Or possibly
hurt someone?)
- Fruit orchards in the Okanagan (Many orchards are being turned into vinyards)
- List of interested turners ( Let Carl know and he will E'Mail other members)
SALVAGED LUMBER
- Building sites, particularly expensive ones
- Cabinet makers or other woodworking businesses
- Pallets and heavy equipment cradles
- Fellow woodworkers
PURCHASED LUMBER
- Plank, slab or turning round
- Black Forest Wood Co. cut, planed & jointed, - large selection
- Bacon Veneer, cut only to fit vehicle only, some slabs - good selection
- Lee Valley, some precut small turning squares, occasional exotics

Don suggested that turners check prices of materials as they may differ from different sources. He produced 6 small teak salad bowls (turned with wide sides) purchased from The Bay and presented a challenge to the first 6 willing members to take them home and finish turning them and bring the finished pieces back to the next meeting.

- Russian Olive, Apple, Butternut, Burl (any species), Myrtle, Chesnut, Mayday,
Caragana.

William is
Difficult to reach at work - which is a school. If you leave a message, it
may take a while
for him to call you back. William likes to barter. Wood exchanges - William
has considerable Manzanita - a beautiful red colourations - it's a root burl
that he harvested in California.

- Someone was looking for Butternut. I brought some back from Vancouver with
a plan to
share. Unfortunately, I did not note the name of the person from our September
meeting.
