ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEW BUSINESS/OTHER

- REVIVAL OF “THE CHALLENGE’

We need a new name for this – how about “The Monthly Project”??? Tony suggested that we design and build a business card holder. The majority (or preponderance) of which shall be turned. Bring your creations to our MAY meeting when we will arrange for lots of time to discuss design etc.

This is content of an E’Mail from President Terry:

“It is with sadness that I inform you that Frank Szomathy, a member of our woodturning club, died suddenly at home on April 10th. His wife, Jane called and told me that woodturning had given him a lot of joy in the last years of his life. He had recently finished a series of four hollowed and carved pieces in the form of angles that were not only his most challenging but pieces that he was also pleased with. He planned to enter them in the Stampede craft show and then give them as Xmas presents to his children. I told Jane that we will proceed with entering his work in the Stampede. I will miss Frank. He was enthusiastic, joyful, appreciative and fun to be with. There will be a memorial service in Saskatchewan this summer, Terry”

SHOW AND TELL TABLE

Featured Speaker - John Chalke

John is an artist who works in ceramics and who teaches at the Alberta College of Arts and Design (ACAD). He professes to know nothing about woodturning, but his insights into art and to things that make us feel good were very pertinent. John was born in the UK, then moved to Calgary in 1968 as a young man.

There is no way to properly summarize John’s two hour presentation in these notes. He presented slides in two sets. The first set of slides was pictures of inspirational subjects, ranging from advertising shots to works of art in several media. His second set of slides was of a more personal nature. It including shots of his work, photos he has taken around the world especially Japan and Korea, and pictures of local Alberta influences.
