ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEW BUSINESS/OTHER

Michael Hosaluk is demonstrating at the Black Forest wood Co. Saturday, May 10 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. $55.00. He recently released his first book “Scratching the Surface, Art and Content in Contemporary Wood”. Mike is internationally recognized as a crafstman, artist, designer and educator – and one of the major forces behind the surface design focus in contemporary woodworking. Mike has lectured and exhibited throughout the United States and Canada and in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East. This is a really good opportunity to learn from and be inspired by very successful Canadian maker. Copies of his book are on hand at Black Forest.

Jim Osenton reminded us about the upcoming SAWS juried exhibition. Up to 3 pieces can be entered, with all submissions in by June 21. Selected pieces will be on display in Calgary for 3 weeks, then at Alberta Crafts in Edmonton for 5 weeks.

Jim Osenton informed us that the owner of the new XYLOS gallery in the Crosssroads Market has given a challenge to our members. Submit turnings of 30cm (height, length, width) containing 1 substance other than wood.

Terry Golbeck reminded us about opportunities for submission of wood turnings to THE CALGARY EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE WESTERN SHOWCASE. The entry form must be submitted by June 10 and the take-in for items is June 25. You can find details at http://www.westernshowcase.com/ E’Mail: info@westernshowcase.com The Calgary Stampede phone number is 261-0101.

Displaying turned objects and demonstrating at the Calgary Stampede Showcase are terrific ways to increase public awareness about woodturning. For those interested in selling turned objects, increased awareness results in a larger market demand.

Jim Thorne will be demonstrating at the WESTERN SHOWCASE and is looking for one more turner. Contact Jim for more details.

GERI ROBINSON promotes wood pieces for sale at charity auctions. What the maker requires in payment is the reserve bid. Anything above the reserve bid is divided between the charity, the promoter and the maker. Contact Geri for further information at 816-7257.

GLENN SUMMERS, 403-631-3899 has come across a large supply of green 1and 2 years old birch stock for turning. Cost would be around $250.00 per cord. Anyone interested call GLENN for more information.

CARL SMITH reported that our Minimum Monthly Discount Fee for our VISA account has gone up from $3.00 to $10.00.

OUR CLUB RELATIONSHIP WITH BLACK FOREST

TERRY GOLBECK informed members that we are to feel comfortable in bringing any information on deals for wood, tools or whatever to the attention of our membership. Don’t let our fine relationship with Black Forest Wood hold anyone back from telling members about deals elsewhere.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Jim Thorne circulated a list for members to record demo’s they could do, also demo’s desired. This is needed as this committee develops our fall agenda. By the way, this is still a committee of one. Call Jim and join him on this important committee.

EXHIBITION COMMITTEE

John Simard and Dave Beeman have agreed to Co-Chair this committee. Other members are, Roger Nobert, Tom Hurst, Carl Smith, Don Soul, and Jaimie Berry. Committee members hope you are developing items for our Spruce Meadows craft sale.

Members thanked Tom Hurst for his past leadership, especially spearheading the Spruce Meadow craft sale.

LIBRARY

Our new Librarian, John Simard, has developed a new format for borrowing/returning items. It is self explanatory and you will see it at Black Forest where our library is housed.

SHOW AND TELL

The new system of having an Instant Gallery Table for display of member’s pieces is working! Members brought in many items for viewing/discussion.

Tom Hurst

3 South West design bowls. The one discussed was done from walnut, red dyed maple, blood wood with a maple base. The top, segmented portion, included wavy lines. Tom finishes with sprayed lacquer containing 15% cellulose base. Beautiful presentation of segmented work.

Jim Ossenton

a series of Manitoba Maple bowls all cut from the same piece of wood by using a Centre Saver. Jim removed the bark and finished the edges and while he asked for views on this approach, he didn’t get any as the pieces were so nicely done. base. Beautiful presentation of segmented work.

About six people displayed a good variety of business card holders in response to the March Meeting Challenge. Lots of ingenuity was evident in response to the challenge.

Demonstration

JIM THORNE demonstrated turning chessmen. This is one way to gain comfort in spindle turning. Jim has templates of the various pieces glued to thin plywood which speeds up completion of the various chess pieces. He has, from research, learned about many different types of chess pieces.

Jim proceeded to turn a pawn on his neat mini-lathe. He started with a 2” square piece of wood laminated with maple and walnut. (to result in 1 set with walnut being prominent and the other set in maple). He glued a large washer inside of the base to give final piece good stability. He used a gouge, skew, parting tool, and a pointed tool in his demo. Jim made many of his tools. He has sources for materials. If any member is thinking of making tools, they should talk to Jim first. He has likely “ been there and done that”.

Jim is a relatively new turner and it is nice to see some of his accomplishments and learn from him some neat “tricks of the trade”. ( Like the way he holds his turning tools to keep them steady.)

Thanks for sharing this with us, Jim.
